Patterns

"Everything’s in stages, cycles, phases and they all have these patterns at their bases."

Inspired by the words of Kae Tempest and Nick Payne’s "Constellations", we delved into the intricate archetypes of loving relationships and crossings of time frames - featuring poetry, music, theatre and dance on stage. This play is an experience, a journey where repetition and distortion, variations and motivic developments, harmony and dissonance all come together to illuminate: we humans inherit, hold and pass on our own patterns to others.

Casting

The themes of this devised piece focused on the universal patterns we inhabit as humans. We highlighted this by choosing scenes, poems, and other text that we either repeated in different pairings or that we shared amongst the actors in a free fall fashion. Each repeated scene, performed by different actors, showed that we all have our own individual patterns while experiencing the universal ones.

Meet the Director

Laurent de Montalembert has trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. After graduating, he worked closely with Christian Burgess, Head of Drama at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and has worked as a director on the Preliminary Acting Course course and the Guildhall summer school. In France, Laurent worked at ENSATT where he assisted Hungarian director Arpad Shilling on his devised piece Audition, Competition. He worked at the National Theatre of Strasbourg (TNS) as a movement teacher and was a panel member for the national auditions in 2012. He worked alongside Julie Brochen and Christian Burgess in Italy at Prima del Teatro. He founded the Fontainebleau School of Acting in 2014.
